Best way to contruct worktop from reclaimed timber

Hi, thinking of sourcing some lengths of 9"x2" lengths of hardwood ( from southamptonwoodrecycling dot org dot uk ) and joining them to make a worktop.

My thinking on how to do this is:
1. lay planks together on a pair of trestle and clamp at ends.
2. Drill starter hole just in from one end at the join.
3. Go right down the join with a router straight bit so that we get two perfectly mating surfaces.
4. Remove waste at starter end.
5. Cutaway slots for biscuit joiners, insert biscuits, glue...

Microwave surround in cabinet. Help !!

I am currently working on modifying my kitchen and have moved my undercounter oven into a tall housing unit (with no problems) the issue I have is that our current microwave is too good to get rid of and replace with an integrated one.
Has anyone any ideas I could use to fit some kind of housing surround around the microwave so that it doesn't look like it's just been stuck in the cavity above the oven ???

how would you solve this problem..

The kitchen has a solid concrete floor.

you have stripped the kitchen out.

Looking ay your plans you find the stop tap is sited behind a built in washer with a max of 3 inch of pipe below it into the concrete. your washer will not push back to fit and your stop tap has to be made accessible.

you have 3 days to fit the kitchen, your aim is to complete on schedule with no remedial work as always.

solve it and stay on time ?

Batten wall in kitchen - anchor to wall and floor / just wall?

Hi,

New to DIY and this forum so be gentle!

I’m renovating my one bed flat in an old council block. As part of fitting the kitchen I need to batten out the back wall to cover-up some pipe work, plus make the new electrical wiring easier. Wall will need to support wall units which I plan to secure from rail fixed to noggins.

Please see drawings for reference from following 2 links:

Hardwood worktop finishing : to oil or not to oil?

Title says it really. I have heard folk say you need to do X coats of oil before you let the worktop see any use, and then religiously oilit every week, and others say just leave the wood raw, let it get marked/splashed and just wipe it clean & dry and every year or so sand it. I kind of fear that the regular oiling would be subject to being put-off, and that if water got into an oiled surface it would be worse...

Thoughts welcome!

Cooker hood vent to lean-to

Hi all,

I am currently renovating our kitchen, and as part of this I want to install a cooker hood with an external vent. The cooker will be located on an external wall, which should hopefully make running it to outside a fairly easy DIY job. The problem is that there is a lean-to immediately behind this wall (very basic construction with corrugated plastic roof, currently not used for anything other than storage). The hood shaft will be above the lean-to, but I will likely be looking at...

Right blade for cutting worktop

Here's a simple question. What is the best type of jigsaw blade for cutting a kitchen worktop to length.

It is 40mm thick laminated chipboard and the cut is straight across the width (i.e. about 600mm) but I have only one spare piece to match with the existing so I can't afford to mess up.

I have a Bosch GST 2000 jigsaw. The blade doesn't have to be a downwards cutter as I can mark and cut from the top or bottom surface. I have looked at details of T101BR, T101BRF blades but they say...

Hi,
First of many posts I'm sure!

I've recently started doing work on the side, handyman bits!

Just been asked to do a fairly bigger job then I'm used too,

I need to raise part of a kitchen worktop to the same height as the rest of the kitchen, the worktop in question is around 3 meters in length and has intergrated fridge, freezer,
the customer wants to keep half at the lower height and the other half raised to fit a base unit or two and a normal washing machine (plumbing already in...

Got 2 new worktops supplied, delivered, and set direct to garage on lots of wooden timbers.
2 weeks later the fitting day arrived.
Unwrapping the plastic off and find lots of very small swirls of scratches.

Fortunately most of the scratches were where the cuts outs were to be, so a lot of jiggling with measurements and looked reasonable.

Unable to ring supplier as was a Sat morning.
So no real choice but to carry on and fit.

Both worktops were quite bad.
Monday morning rang the said...

Hello,

Can anyone with experience please tell me what the best budget kitchen options are and whether it is even possible to find what I am looking for for my budget.

I am after 10 units, white gloss integrated handles + sink + oven + hob + hood + fridge freezer (all most basic budget option), soft close, + worktops for £1800 max. Preferably already part assembled. Able to be supplied within a week.

I was thinking about going for cheap ready to fit units and then decent quality worktops...

I am fitting a utility room and have to put a washing machine next to a larder unit.

What's the best way to support the worktop over the washing machine? I have been thinking about cutting the larder unit decor end in half and sitting the worktop between the two halves? It's either that or brackets?

Is there a better way?

Hi all I just need some info on silicone sealant's, I have always used sanitary silicone but looking at the back of the tube it says not for use in food prep areas but on the front it says for use in kitchens? I'm confused if any one can shed some light on this that would be awesome.

Going to be having a free-standing cooker, with (probably granite) worktops each side running up to it.

What's the best way to seal the gaps between the worktops and the cooker to stop spills etc running down the side?
