Replacing seal around hob

Hey,

The seal around our Electrolux gas hob has come loose. To my untrained eye this looks like a silicon sealant of some type (?), though from reading around the forum it sounds like that's not the right way to seal in a hob.

Any suggestions on what I can do here? I'm guessing removing the existing sealant and re-sealing it is a bad idea?
